Harvey Laner's: Wanderlust 1955-1958
Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society Monograph No.10,
Remembrances of The Pacific Electric Railway chronicles Harvey
Laner’s first-person experiences riding the last days of the Pacific
Electric’s Red Cars in Southern California. Then, it follows his
participation in the rail car preservation activities following the demise
of Southern California traction, culminating in his being one of the
fourteen founders of the Orange Empire Railway Museum, todays
Southern California Railway Museum.
This video brings the “Wanderlust” chapter of Harvey’s monograph to
life by replacing the photos in the book with actual digitized movie
footage he shot in and around Chicago and the eastern United States
and Canadian cities that still had streetcars and interurbans operating
in the mid-to-late1950s, such as:
Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee
London & Port Stanley
Quebec Railway Light & Power
Johnstown Traction
Pittsburgh Railways
Philadelphia Suburban Transportation
and many more.
It also includes the railfanning Harvey and his friends did on the SP
narrow gauge in Owens Valley, Nevada Northern in the Kennecott
Copper days and riding the daily SP mixed train on the Tijuana &
Tecate. And Tehachapi and Cajon in the Union Pacific and Santa Fe
“E” and “F” unit days is also well represented.
We will also have a short newscast preceding the regular program.
This program is open to all CERA members, their guests and the public.
