Trips in 2000

CERA sponsored three trips on Labor Day Weekend.

On Friday, three groups of 10 members were conducted on a walking tour of the tunnels of the long defunct Chicago Tunnel Company. The tour lasted approximately 1 hour and began and ended at the City Hall sub-basement entrance to the tunnel system. In the afternoon, about 30 other members were allowed a peek and brief walk into the tunnel from the same entrance. Tickets were sold to members only on a first-come-first serve basis, and unfortunately some members were disappointed. Demand exceeded availability.

For more information about the Chicago Tunnel Company, including photos of CERA's trip, check out the website that CERA Member Phil O'Keefe has developed.

On Saturday, CERA chartered a bus for a combined trip to the newly opened Kenosha Wisconsin heritage PCC trolley operation, and the East Troy Wisconsin Trolley Museum. Approximately 90 persons took advantage of the bus transportation; others joined the group at Kenosha and East Troy. At Kenosha four PCCs were on hand for riding and photographing. (The fifth PCC had not yet arrived.)

On Sunday, CERA chartered a special 5-car CTA train for an all-day excursion over the elevated structure and Skokie and Evanston lines. The train included a flat car in the middle of the train. Approximately 60 persons took part in this trip.
