O.R. Cummings, also known by many as Dick Cummings, was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1923. Cummings was a long-time employee of the Manchester (NH) Union-Leader newspaper, where he rose to the position of copy editor.

Cover of Bulletin #139Cummings became interested in trolley transportation at a young age. He began writing street railway histories in 1948 and has never stopped. Among his most ambitious efforts were a five-volume history of the Massachusetts Northeastern and a six volume series on the rolling stock of the Boston Elevated Railway and its predecessors.

Cummings is a member and a former chairman of the board of trustees of the New England Electric Railway Society Inc.
